Petersburg’s City Council will discuss the merits of its three city manager finalists in an executive session at Monday night’s meeting. Some councilors have said Alaskan experience is a key quality they’d like to see in a manager. Scott Hahn is one of the two finalists who have worked in the state. Petersburg’s City Council will take another major step in the city manager search Monday night. Councilors are scheduled to discuss their three finalists in a closed door executive session. Afterwards, they could decide to hire one of the three or do more interviews or broaden the search. The city has interviewed each of the finalists by phone or in person and so has KFSK public radio. Group fine-tunes concept for Scow Bay boat yard

A proposed haul-out and boat yard at scow bay could be managed by the City of Petersburg with some on-site help from the private sector. That’s the general concept favored by local residents and officials who have been planning the project. They discussed management and environmental issues, and fine-tuned some of the facility’s features in their latest meeting. Matt Lichtenstein has more on the discussion.

Petersburg hospital chooses new doctor

Petersburg Medical Center has found a fourth physician who is planning to begin work next fall. The hospital has offered the job to Doctor Jennifer Hyer. She's accepted and they are working out contract details. Originally from Wisconsin, Hyer is currently finishing her residency in family medicine through Providence Hospital in Anchorage. As Matt Lichtenstein reports, she’s excited about starting her career in Petersburg.

Petersburg man makes another run for state house seat

Petersburg Republican Steven Samuelson says boosting ferry ridership and energy development are two of the issues he’ll tackle if he’s elected to the Alaska house next year. The 32-year-old hardware store employee is starting his second run for the District 2 seat representing Petersburg, Wrangell, Sitka, Pelican, Elfin Cove and Port Alexander. He challenged Wrangell incumbent Peggy Wilson in the August 2008 primary, winning 39 percent of the votes cast in that race, with his strongest support in his hometown. Samuelson spent part of last year working for the Sitka-based company Allen Marine in the Juneau area. He also got married in August and says he’s spent time following the legislature during last winter’s session and staying involved with the regional organization Southeast Conference. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Samuelson about his decision to run again.
