New group quizzes local candidates

Candidates for city council in Petersburg this week answered some quick-fire questions from members of a new local group. The collection of local residents calls itself MINGLe, for Mitkof Island Next Generation Leadership, and it used a speed dating format to interview some of the candidates for three council seats.

Black + White = McCabe

A new solo exhibit from local artist John McCabe goes on display at Petersburg’s Clausen Memorial Museum today. The show is called “Black + White = McCabe”. It features a series of abstract oils on canvas flanked by many other works of graphite and colored pencil on paper. Matt Lichtenstein stopped by the museum this week for a preview of McCabe’s show:

State, City plan downtown road improvements

Petersburg’s Main Street and several other downtown roadways are slated for a major makeover in a couple years. This week, city and state officials met with local residents to talk about the road reconstruction project, which is in the planning stages. They touched on a variety of issues – from the temporary impact on local businesses and downtown events to the installation of new driveways and sidewalk art.

Artists with Swedish roots open colorful show

Two artists with Swedish roots opened up a show of new works in Petersburg this month. The show is called "Magic" and it is on display at Seaport Gallery. It features 16 new water color and oil paintings completed over this past summer by Petersburg artist Pia Rielly along with around 30 collage paintings and ceramic works done by Seattle artist Kerstin McKee. The two friends have had joint shows together before in Petersburg, Seattle and their native Sweden. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Reilly and McKee this week about their latest work.

School board debates Stedman snack program

Petersburg elementary school kids would have a nutritious snack every day at school under a new program proposed by district staff this fall. Petersburg’s School Board and staff Tuesday debated the merits of the snack proposal and are hoping for more feedback on the idea.
