Petersburg runners take on Klondike relay

Petersburg was well represented at this month’s running of the Klondike International Road Relay from Skagway to Whitehorse. Teams of ten people run and walk through the night to cover the 110 mile course. This year over 1,200 runners and walkers comprising 137 teams from the U.S. and Canada competed.

A Petersburg High School student spent last year in Taiwan, while this year, a German high schooler is studying in Petersburg. Both are part of the rotary clubs international exchange program. City set to lease land for haul-out business

The Petersburg City Council, Monday, gave preliminary approval for a lease with Island Ventures LLC. The local boat haul-out and storage business wants to use a portion of the city’s land at Scow bay. The councilors were generally supportive of the plan, but they also wanted to make sure there was insurance coverage if any environmental problems occurred at the site.

Landslide hits Mitkof Highway in Petersburg

A large landslide covered a section of Mitkof highway in Petersburg Sunday night. No one was injured, but debris blocked the road, damaged culverts and knocked out electricity to many residents. State and city workers spent several hours on the scene, clearing the roadway and power lines.

OCS to keep caseworker in Petersburg

The state’s Office of Children’s Services says it will keep a social worker in Petersburg. The local OCS branch covers child abuse and neglect cases in Petersburg, Wrangell and Kake. Area residents and social service officials had feared the agency was going to move both of its Petersburg-based social worker jobs to Juneau.
