Two Petersburg high school teachers received statewide honors this spring. The Alaska Society for Technology in Education chose social studies and videography teacher Jim Engell as its teacher of the year. Science teacher Vic Trautman was named Alaska’s outstanding earth science teacher of the year by The National Association of Geoscience teachers. For a little over a year, thousands of Alaskan residents have been taking advantage of an energy rebate program that reimburses homeowners for retrofitting their homes. The latest series of oil paintings from local artist Beth Flor will go on display tonight with a reception at Petersburg’s seaport gallery. Flor produced the 31 new works over the past year. Two have been exhibited nationally but none have been shown before in Petersburg.
Flor’s paintings realistically capture a moment of light and shadow on objects, spaces and structures: a bowl of lemons on a table – a Mexican gate surrounded by bougainvillea – white lilies – a dressmakers form. Flor is well-known for her still-life’s as well as her landscapes and there are both in this show. She spoke with KFSK's Matt Lichtenstein
