Storyteller visits

A nationally-acclaimed children’s storyteller and author is holding workshops and giving performances in several southeast Alaska towns this week. Jim Weiss has won numerous awards for his recordings of classic literature, folk tales and history.
His most recent works include readings from Rudyard Kipling’s “Just So Stories” and Charles Dickens “A Tale of Two Cities”. Matt Lichtenstein previewed some of the recordings and spoke with Weiss about his craft:

Principal finalist visits

The Petersburg School District's top choice for high school principal is in town. Richard Dormer has been visiting with staff, students, parents and touring the community.
For the past two years, Dormer has worked as Dean of Students at Aloha High School in Beaverton, Oregon. The school has about 18 hundred students and Dormer spent five years as a science teacher there before taking the Deans position. Dormer is married with two young children. He holds a Master’s degree in teaching from Pacific University and a bachelors of science in biology from Oregon state. He’s also a soccer coach. Dormer had a full schedule Thursday, but took some time to talk with KFSK’s Matt Lichtenstein about his current job and his interest in working at Petersburg High:

Students track Glacier's moves

LeConte glacier near Petersburg has advanced 300 feet. That’s according to the results of this year’s glacier survey by Petersburg High School students. State turns down electric service area request

The state has rejected Petersburg’s request to expand its electrical service area. The new boundaries would have included Ruth lake in nearby Thomas Bay, where local officials hope to eventually build a new hydro-electric plant. A service extension might have given Petersburg more of an advantage in its competition for a federal permit to pursue the new hydro project. However, state regulators say Petersburg needs to provide more information to justify such an expansion.
