Cheap hydro power coming to two more POW towns

Residents of two communities on northern Prince of Wales island should be seeing a big drop in their electrical bills in the next few years. That’s thanks to a publicly-funded power line extension project. State grant money will allow the private company Alaska Power and Telephone to connect Coffman Cove and Naukiti to the island's power grid in the next three years.

Petersburg readies for runway shutdown

Planes won’t be landing on Petersburg’s runway during a month-long shutdown that starts up Sunday night. The closure will allow for the replacement of three culverts underneath the landing strip. It will have airline passengers taking a shuttle bus and ferry to and from Alaska Airline flights in Wrangell for the next month.

Company surrenders two tidal energy permits

A private company has given up federal permits to study the potential for tidal power generation at two sites in Southeast Alaska. Washington D.C. based Alaska Tidal Energy last month surrendered its Federal Energy Regulatory Commission preliminary permits for tidal power in the Wrangell Narrows near Petersburg and Icy Passage near Gustavus.

District chooses four finalists for school superintendent

The Petersburg School District will be bringing four people to town next month to interview for the school superintendent’s job. Three of the four candidates have experience working in Alaska schools, and they include the superintendent in Juneau. Petersburg’s School Board Wednesday released the names of their four finalists for the district’s top job.

Felt sole waders banned for Southeast anglers in 2011

Sport anglers who wade through Southeast Alaska’s creeks and rivers may have to get some new fishing gear in the next two years. That follows a decision by the state Board of Fish at it's February meeting in Sitka. The board voted to prohibit the use of felt sole waders starting in 2011. It’s a move designed to limit the spread of non-native plants and animals and it may be among the first such bans in the nation.
