Sport shellfish shutdown fails, bag limits to drop

The Alaska Board of Fish this month voted down a proposal to close the Southeast region to sport fishing for crab, shrimp, clams and other shellfish. However, the board did vote to reduce bag limits for sport caught shrimp, Dungeness and Tanner crab.

Southeast fishing interests at odds over Dungeness closures

The state’s Board of Fish last week heard testimony over proposals to open and close a number of areas in Southeast to commercial fishing for Dungeness crab. Some proposals seek to end commercial harvests around several Southeast towns but there are also attempts to reopen some closed commerical spots.

Petersburg’s City Council has set a goal for a five percent cut to municipal spending in the next fiscal year. That decision came as the last item in nearly four-hours of discussion about the city’s draft strategic plan last week.

Wrangell leaders OK with Petersburg hydro filing

Some of Wrangell’s assembly members are expressing hope that their community and Petersburg can work together on a proposed hydroelectric plant near Petersburg.
The Ruth lake proposal is one of several recent power issues that have caused a political rift between the two close neighbors. This month, Petersburg’s City Council and Wrangell’s assembly each voted unanimously to apply for an exclusive federal permit for rights to the project. But as Matt Lichtenstien reports, Wrangell’s Borough Assembly may reconsider.
