The state’s Board of Fish last week heard testimony over proposals to open and close a number of areas in Southeast to commercial fishing for Dungeness crab. Some proposals seek to end commercial harvests around several Southeast towns but there are also attempts to reopen some closed commerical spots.

Two proposals in front of the board at their meeting this week in Petersburg pit commercial crabbers against residents who want to catch crab for their dinner table.

Several proposals before the state’s Board of Fish this month seek to eliminate sport fishing for shellfish in Southeast. The proposals aim to cut out-of-state visitors, lodge and guide clients out of the region’s harvest of crab, clams, shrimp and other shellfish.
