Burn ordinance may see changes

New rules on open burning are in the works for Petersburg. The Public Safety Advisory board this week began consideration of an ordinance to clarify what sort of fires are and are not allowed under local and state law. The draft measure would also establish a written permit system and a schedule of fines for violations. The issue sparked to life this fall after a large open burn of demolition waste prompted public complaints and subsequent concern from state environmental officials.

Commercial and Charter concerns play out at IPHC

The commercial and charter fishing fleets are taking their concerns over halibut catch limits to the International Pacific Halibut Commission this week. The IPHC has its annual meeting in Vancouver BC and for the third year in a row, commission staff is proposing a deep cut to the Southeast Alaska harvest.

Forest Service looks at logging south of Kake

The U.S. Forest service has released plans for a new Tongass timber sale on western Kupreanof Island, about nine miles south of the city of Kake. The agency hopes to use money from the timber sale to create jobs for the community of Kake.

Petersburg demands fix on Manor addition

Petersburg officials say there are problems with the foundation under the new assisted living wing of its elderly housing complex. The City Council is demanding a fix from the projects design consultants. The Council met with an attorney earlier this week to discuss the possibility of taking legal action. The buildings designers say they do not agree there is a problem with the foundation . Still they hope to discuss the issue with the city.
