Petersburg and Wrangell leaders differ on power agency plan

The Petersburg City Council is poised to approve the split-up of the Four Dam Pool Power Agency. Four Dam Pool officials met with the council last week to go over the terms of the deal. It would allow Petersburg, Wrangell, and Ketchikan to take joint ownership of the hydroelectric plants serving their towns. All the towns have to approve the deal for it to go through. A majority of Petersburg’s councilors seemed supportive of the plan in general. But some worried about the representation on the proposed Southeast Power Agency Board….. and whether a majority on the Wrangell Assembly will oppose it.

No move for Police Department yet, more council news

Petersburg will not be moving its police department up to the Elizabeth Peratrovich building. The Petersburg Indian Association offered the space to the city this spring, but the city council declined the offer Monday night. Also this week, councilors approved a demolition bid for the old pool, and they learned the city will get more raw fish tax than expected.

Council picks new acting mayor on split vote.

A majority of Petersburg City Councilors voted in a new acting mayor this week. The council voted four to three Monday to appoint Lee Corrao as mayor pro-tem when Mayor Al Dwyer is unavailable. Corrao replaces Mark Jensen, who served in that post for the past year.

Audit: City spent less, took in more revenue last year

The City of Petersburg was in good financial shape this past fiscal year. That’s according to the city’s auditor who reported this week that Petersburg spent 400 thousand dollars less from its general fund than the year before. At the same time, the city took in more general fund revenue.

Parents upset over school drug incident

Petersburg school officials heard numerous complaints from the public this month after an administrator chose not to contact police about an alleged drug deal in the middle school. The issue dominated public testimony at this month’s School Board meeting. Board members pledged to deal with the matter.
