Council OK's harbor survey, debates security concerns

Petersburg harbor users can give their opinion on harbor services and costs next month. The city council has finally approved a survey that will go out with the next billing. The effort was prompted by concern over rising moorage rates. The city had hoped to put the questionnaire out earlier but was waiting for more input from the harbor advisory board. The board came up with a recommended revision last week and the council approved it Monday night but it was not unanimous as some councilors were not satisfied with the harbor board’s version.

City sells residential lots

The City of Petersburg sold just six of the twenty properties it put up for auction Monday night. Still, a crowd turned out for the event at the council chambers and the city made nearly 113,000 dollars in about a half an hour. The remainder of the land is expected to be put up for over-the-counter sale later this fall.

Skateboarders influence city council

A group of skateboarders made a difference at a meeting of the Petersburg City Council this month. The group objected to a proposed ordinance to expand the restrictions on the sport throughout town. In response to the skater’s testimony, the council unanimously agreed to make some changes to the measure.

Forest Service recreation sites rebuilt

Two U.S. Forest Service recreation sites along Mitkof Highway south of Petersburg are undergoing major reconstruction work this year. The Blind Slough picnic area 17 miles south of town will see a new larger parking area and new shelters installed over the next twelve months. A mile to the north, a rebuild of the Swan Observatory shelter is nearly complete.

University looks at why youth leave fishing towns

Researchers from the University of Alaska are studying why more young people are leaving fishing-dependent communities and what might make them more likely to stay. The project is meant to shed light on the concerns of older teens and young adults in their early 20’s who see few economic opportunities in their home towns.
