School Board approves new student athlete rules

Local students in school sports and other extra-curricular activities have a new set of consequences for using alcohol, tobacco or drugs. Petersburg’s school board Tuesday reworked minimum activity suspensions for students caught using illegal substances, to come in line with a new statewide activities policy.

Seine season sees poor numbers, high prices

Southeast Alaska seine fishermen had a far-below-average pink salmon total this year. While dockside prices were up substantially, effort was down and there was a lot less time and area to fish because of the poor pink returns. Those low numbers are troubling to fishery managers who say many northern-southeast streams did not meet escapement goals. As the 2008 seine season neared its end, Matt Lichtenstein took a look at the numbers from Alaska fish and game.

Harbor board approves survey

Petersburg’s Harbor Advisory Board has approved language for a survey of harbor users. The survey, requested by the city council, still needs approval by the council later this month…before it goes out to harbor users. After failing to muster a quorum for an august meeting, four members of the harbor board reviewed the survey last Wednesday.

ANB/ANS camp restarted in Petersburg

Petersburg’s Alaska Native Brotherhood and Sisterhood camps are up and running once again, with new leadership and almost 40 members. Through nearly 100 years of history, the organization has played a central role in support of native rights and culture in Alaska. The ANB-ANS membership includes both natives and non-natives. It’s been several years since the group has been active in Petersburg. The re-organized membership recently elected Ross Naunuk III as the local ANB president. MaryAnn Rainey was elected president of ANS in Petersburg. In October, Petersburg will join other ANB-ANS camps from around Alaska at the Grand Camp convention in Ketchikan. Matt Lichtenstein spoke with Naunuk and Rainey about the local organization:
