Hospital board agrees to end birthing services

Expectant mothers will no longer have the option of giving birth at Petersburg medical center next year. The hospital board this month reluctantly voted to stop offering routine delivery services. Medical staff recommended the change because of the lack of surgical back-up, the difficulty of recruiting doctors with obstetrical experience, and the declining number of local deliveries. Overall, hospital staff and administrators saw it as a safety issue.

Over a hundred and twenty runners from eleven southeast schools came to Petersburg for the Jack Eddy Classic cross country meet Saturday at Sandy Beach. Petersburg held its newest celebration last week. The Tongass Rainforest Festival included nature talks and walks, a taste of the rainforest potluck and a wild, berry cook-off as well as classes on harvesting, using and preserving the bounty of the Tongass – from picking plants and mushrooms to canning salmon. Ethnobotanist talks plants and people

Studying the relationships between the plants and people of British Columbia has been Nancy Turner’s passion for over 40 years. Turner is a professor at the school of environmental studies in Victoria. She is an ethno-botanist who has authored more than 20 books about plants and contributed to 40 more. Local artist displays new fabric artwork

A show of 20 new works of fabric art is on display at the Clausen Memorial Museum IN Petersburg. Artist Susan Christiansen is also showing some of her earlier water-color work, acrylic collage, and mixed media. Matt Lichtenstein visited Christiansen at her studio above the Sons of Norway hall to take a look at some of her newest fabric works. They will be on display at the museum through the month of September.
