PMC may stop delivering babies

Petersburg’s hospital may stop delivering babies on a routine basis next year. Physicians are recommending the change for the medical center which has seen a substantial decline in the number of local births. The hospital would continue to offer pre-natal and post-partum care.

Volcano ash travelled far, affected SE

Alaska Airlines says it resumed operations Monday (8/11) after cancelling dozens of flights over the weekend due to volcanic ash. The cloud of ash and gas from last week’s eruptions in the Aleutian chain affected aviation throughout much of the state. The recent volcanic activity even affected Southeast Alaska….roughly a thousand miles away. Matt Lichtenstein has a look at the effects on the panhandle.

District 2 House Republican call-in summary

The two Republicans vying for the house seat representing Petersburg, Wrangell, Sitka and several smaller communities, spoke at a public radio forum in Petersburg Friday night (8/8). Incumbent Peggy Wilson emphasized her legislative experience and seniority. Challenger Steven Samuelson stressed his background as a lifelong Alaskan who has worked in a variety of businesses including commercial fishing and retail.

Board talks new penalties for student athletes who use drugs, alcohol

Local school students who take part in sports and other extra-curricular activities this year will be seeing some different punishments for using alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The Petersburg school district is rewriting its rules for student athletes to come into line with a new statewide rule. …and members of the school board last week suggested some big changes to the district’s minimum punishments. However, the new local rules will be seeing more revisions over the next few months.

City back in court over Fram Street building

The city of Petersburg is back in court to try and demolish or remove an historic and deteriorating building in downtown. The city council Monday heard about the latest attempts to move or tear down the oldest building in Petersburg, as well as pleas to leave the 106-year-old structure alone. One council member also questioned when the city made the decision to pursue the issue again.
