The Petersburg City Council Monday voted to name two local bridges after two Norwegian pioneers who settled here in 1901. The bridges crossing Hammer Slough will be named after Rasmus Enge and Louis Miller.

Petersburg’s city council chambers this summer is crawling with worms – at least on Fridays that is. "Wormology” is one a number of educational activites for kids put on by Petersburg Public Library while school is out of session. As reporter Chelsea Tremblay discovered, the weekly session is advertised as “B-Y-O-W: bring your own worms.”

Crew members, families and friends of the Petersburg-based coast guard cutter Elderberry on Wednesday said goodbye to one skipper and welcomed another during a ceremony under sunny skies on the Petersburg waterfront. The change of command ceremony for the 65-foot buoy tender marked the end of a two-year stint for Master Chief Matt Lasley, who handed over the helm to Senior Chief Jim Madsen. He’s a native of Bellevue, Washington and an 18-year veteran of the Coast Guard.

A proposed U.S. Forest Service timber sale on northern Kuiu Island in central Southeast Alaska focuses new logging and road building on a portion of the island that has already seen extensive harvesting. That’s an approach spelled out in this year’s revision of the Tongass forest plan.

Two separate engineering firms agree on the ways to fix Petersburg’s problematic 10-year-old water pipeline from the city's Cabin Creek reservoir. However the companies are not in complete agreement over the root causes of the pipeline’s loss of water flow. The city of Petersburg this month released a review of the pipeline’s engineering and a response from the company that designed and oversaw the line’s construction.
