Two city councilors won't run again

Two members of Petersburg’s City Council say they won’t run for re-election this fall. The terms for councilors Dan Hickman and John Havrilek both run out this October and both men say they’re not interested in serving again.

Halibut Commission director says charter boat limits needed

A Washington D.C. judge this week heard arguments for and against lifting a one-fish halibut bag limit for Southeast Alaska charter fishing clients. The International Pacific Halibut Commmission, which manages halibut stocks in the U.S. and Canada, has filed a brief in that court case, and has concerns about exceeding a charter guideline harvest level in area 2C, or Southeast Alaska. IPHC Executive Director Bruce Leaman was in Petersburg this week and Joe Viechnicki asked him about the commission’s involvement in the charter lawsuit along with the status of this year’s commerical halibut season.

Fuel prices add to independent ferry fares

High fuel prices are translating into more expensive rides on Southeast Alaska’s two independently-run ferries. An Inter-Island Ferry Authority fuel surcharge has added as much as 40 percent to the price of passenger and vehicle fares this year. It’s not a new charge, but it has hit new heights in 2008, and ferry managers say it is impacting ridership.

Paddlewheel cruise ship cuts short 2008 season

It will be a shortened 2008 cruise season for one of the more unusual ships that visits Southeast Alaska. The 360-foot Empress of the North paddlewheel cruise ship is cancelling seven Southeast Alaska sailings in August and September. Majestic America Line, the company that owns the Empress, is also cancelling Columbia and Snake River sailings on the Empress and Mississippi River sailings on another of its ships, the American Queen.

Spring king catches down for gillnetters and trollers

Catches of king salmon in Southeast’s spring gillnet and troll fisheries are down from last year. After some shortened openings, gillnetters in central Southeast are starting to switch their focus away from this spring’s run of Stikine River king salmon. Meanwhile, the overall catch in the spring troll fisheries targeting hatchery kings is down as well.
