Five new art pieces adorn aquatic center

Swimmers at Petersburg’s aquatic center will notice five new colorful artworks adorning the building’s interior space and walls. The murals, stained glass and fabric sculptures were created by five women, three from Petersburg and two from elsewhere in Alaska. The works were dedicated at a ceremony Saturday.

Compared to some other Alaska communities, Petersburg escaped relatively unscathed during the latest round of capital project vetoes announced by the Palin Adminstration last week. Petersburg will not be getting $5.3 million to help build a new fire hall this year but will get a portion of that money. Local property owners upset about assessment levels for their homes, businesses and land found a sympathetic ear before members of Petersburg’s City Council earlier this month. Council members serve as the town’s Board of Equalization and, in that role, councilors decide on property assessment appeals.
