TLO tries to addres POW island concerns

Alaska Mental Health Trust Officials say they will soon submit a formal proposal for a land swap with the Forest Service in Southeast Alaska.The TLO wants to exchange 20 thousand acres of its property in communities around the region for mainly 2nd growth timber lands of similar value on Prince of Wales Island. Trust land managers have been discussing the idea with the forest service and communities for the past year. Trust officials say they have revised their plan to address concerns raised by Prince of Wales residents.

Tidal power projects for SE

A Washington DC company hopes to go with a shorter and simpler federal licensing process to study tidal power generation at two sites in southeast Alaska. The company is looking at tidal energy potential in the Wrangell narrows near Petersburg and in icy strait near Gustavus but is abandoning plans a third site, in Gastineau channel near Juneau.

TLO head discusses DC trip, PSG lands

Alaska Mental Health Trust Land Office Director Harry Noah travelled to Washington DC last month to meet with Forest Service leadership and Alaska’s Congressional Delegation. Noah was there to generate support for his agency’s proposed land exchange with the forest service…an exchange that would include land the trust had initially considered logging on the steep hillsides along Mitkof highway. During his visit to Petersburg last week, Matt Lichtenstein asked Noah about the discussions in DC and plans for the Mitkof highway trust lands.

Plein air show

A love for the outdoors and artistic expression come together in Petersburg friday evening in a show of works by five local painters. They are all part of the local Plein-air group.
Plein-air is a French expression that means “open air”. It’s generally used to describe the tradition of painting outside, on location, rather than painting from a photo or other image that was made earlier.The new show includes paintings from Sandy Wolf, Doug Long, Berthiel Evans, Don Cornelius and Carol Beckett. Matt lichtenstein stopped by Wild Celery to get a preview of the show from Cornelius and Beckett.

Proposed borough knows no bounds

Petersburg’s proposed borough has been the topic of conversation for many people inside and outside the city limits these days. Later this month, the city will hold a public meeting to answer questions about the borough plans. Recently, KFSK news teamed up with Crabbait Radio volunteer Nicole Clowery for several live reports from the farthest flung reaches of the proposed borough.
