Another issue that could make its way onto Petersburg’s ballot this year is whether to allow off-road vehicles and snow machines on the streets of Mitkof Island. A local four-wheeler owner plans to collect signatures this spring for a vote to allow driving All-Terrain Vehicles and other recreational vehicles on the streets of Petersburg.

Petersburg High School’s boys basketball team beat Metlakatla 58-52 Friday night to claim the 2A region title and clinch a spot at the state tournament this week. The girls team saw their season come to an end with a loss Friday to Wrangell.

A Petersburg resident is hoping to restart the discussion on whether to continue adding fluoride to the local water supply. Petersburg is one of only two communities in Southeast Alaska that still fluoridates.

The Petersburg borough is in court this year defending the search of a home slated for demolition in 2014. Borough officials visited the vacant home on Wrangell Avenue looking for asbestos tile in case the municipality ended up taking down the structure. The homeowners are arguing that was an unlawful search of their property. The lawsuit could go to trial this May unless a judge dismisses the case before that.

Sport anglers in the waters around the Stikine River near Petersburg and Wrangell have restrictions this spring because of low king salmon numbers but fishing is not closed like it is near Juneau.
