Sport fishing for wild king salmon in Southeast Alaska is now more restricted for some people. All anglers are prohibited from harvesting wild king salmon outside of state waters, and nonresident anglers can no longer fish for wild kings in the region. State managers closed the sector because of harvest projections. The regulations went into effect July 7 and will last through the end of September.

The recently passed budget reconciliation bill, signed into law by President Donald Trump last week, does not include U.S. Senator Mike Lee’s (R-Utah) withdrawn proposal that could have potentially sold off areas of the Tongass and Chugach National Forests and parts of the Interior in Alaska. But even so, the Petersburg Borough is going on the record against selling public lands.

Two men arrested by law enforcement during a sting operation last month in Petersburg have pleaded not guilty. A grand jury indicted the suspects for their alleged connection to a scheme that defrauded a Petersburg senior of over $100,000. An arrest warrant has been issued for a third suspect who remains at large.
