Sitka raptors visit Petersburg schools

Owlison the owl and Jake the hawk flew down from the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka to Petersburg. But they didn’t fly in on their own — they came on a seaplane with their human handlers. The Alaska Raptor Center treats and rehabilitates over 200 injured birds each year — but some can’t be returned to the wild. Some of these non-releasable birds get to join the Center’s “Raptors-in-Residence team,” where they help teach school kids about the natural history of raptors. Two of them visited Petersburg schools in March.

Petersburg Assembly moves forward with plans for a new hospital

Petersburg is moving forward with plans for a new borough-owned hospital. However, some community members have concerns about what assembly members are calling “the biggest project in the history of Petersburg.”

Petersburg Borough Assembly to hear 2023 property tax assessments

Petersburg’s Borough Assembly will meet today at 6 p.m. The Assembly is scheduled to hear 2023 property tax assessment appeals. The Appraisal Company of Alaska will brief the Borough on the property valuation process for Petersburg. This year, 67 appeals were filed, including one appeal filed after the deadline. Of these, 46 appeals have been resolved.

An ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Russia is impacting airline operations across Alaska. On the morning of April 13th, an ash cloud passed over the Southcentral and Southeastern parts of the state, grounding many commercial flights. However, some services are still able to get through.

Easter Sunday windstorm fells trees, snaps power lines on the south end of Mitkof Island

A windstorm tore through the Petersburg Borough on Easter Sunday, which blew trees onto Mitkof Highway and snapped two power poles near the Crystal Lake Hydroelectric Plant.
