A Petersburg man indicted in 2024 on felony charges related to child sexual abuse material pleaded guilty last week, agreeing to a plea deal with the state. The parties and the court are expected to finalize the deal and set his sentence at a hearing scheduled for March in Juneau.

Petersburg’s high school basketball season began for the varsity Lady Vikings with a two-day tournament in Metlakatla on Jan. 3-4. While the girls didn’t win their games against the Metlakatla Miss Chiefs, head coach Matt Pawuk said the girls made great strides during their games.

Petersburg’s high school basketball season is well underway, and the boys’ varsity team spent their winter break traveling to games hosted at Craig, Juneau, and Metlakatla. The team won 4 out of the 6 games they’ve played so far.

The unofficial 2026 Petersburg Indian Association election results are in. Tribal members re-elected Carol Martinez to a one-year term as council president, and elected Stephanie Silva to a two-year tribal council seat. Martinez and Silva were the only candidates running for spots on the tribal council this year, leaving two council member seats unfilled.

The Petersburg Borough Assembly has approved having temporary sales tax exemption cards available for seniors with pending eligibility. This allows seniors who are waiting to hear back from the state about their eligibility to still get the sales tax exemption in the meantime.

During its first meeting of the year, Petersburg’s borough assembly reviewed and approved its list of community capital projects. Roughly 70 proposed projects are on the annual list of requests for state funding. The requests come at a time when the state is in a pinch — limited revenue to meet demands.
