Firefighters battle flames in wind and rain as Petersburg home burns down
A Petersburg home was destroyed in a fire Jan. 13. Local firefighters responded to the residential fire about two miles out of town along Frederick Point Drive. By the time they arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames, according to Petersburg’s Fire Chief, Dan Bird. No one was home at the time of the fire; neighbors said that the owners are on vacation.

Alaska State Troopers have identified the person who died in a boating accident near Petersburg last week as Susan Paul, age 73 of California. She was in a 20-foot Hewescraft skiff that sank after a collision with a larger seine boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man stranded in the Keku Strait near Kuiu Island. The man called Petersburg’s police department after an inflatable kayak containing all of his supplies washed away.
