Petersburg schools, surrounding area all-clear following lockdown

UPDATE: The police department confirmed the phone number that placed the false report was an out-of-state caller, but couldn’t trace the exact location. The FBI has been notified.

Petersburg’s school buildings and surrounding area were on lockdown for over an hour Tuesday afternoon after police received a report of a person with an AR-15 gun and multiple magazines in a school bathroom. Officers found no real threat on the premises and determined it was a false report.

Sport fishing for wild kings in Southeast Alaska closed to nonresidents

Sport fishing for wild king salmon in Southeast Alaska is now more restricted for some people. All anglers are prohibited from harvesting wild king salmon outside of state waters, and nonresident anglers can no longer fish for wild kings in the region. State managers closed the sector because of harvest projections. The regulations went into effect July 7 and will last through the end of September.
