Season ends for Petersburg varsity boys and girls at Region V basketball tournament
The season has ended for both of Petersburg’s high school varsity basketball teams after neither progressed far enough in Juneau’s Region V, 2A Tournament.

The Petersburg High School gym was packed as community members – and a small group of Wrangellites – cheered for their home teams. Petersburg’s varsity teams and the boys’ JV team played over two days on Feb. 27-28.

Both the Petersburg Vikings and the Haines Glacier Bears basketball teams were both undefeated coming into their games last week. Although Haines put up a fight, the Vikings won both games on Jan. 29 and 30, scoring 57–38 on Thursday and 59–46 on Friday.

Petersburg’s Lady Vikings had their first home basketball games of the season last week (Jan. 29-Feb. 1). The high schoolers faced off against Haines and Craig, and took home their first wins of the season.

Petersburg’s high school girls’ basketball teams competed in Craig on Jan. 23-24. Craig beat the varsity girls 45-20 on Friday, and won again 39-23 on Saturday.

Fans packed into the bleachers of the high school gym on Jan. 23-24 to cheer on the Petersburg Vikings as they played against the Craig Panthers. It was the boys’ first home varsity games of the season, and Craig fought hard as the teams raced up and down the court. Petersburg took both wins over the weekend, scoring 58-25 on Friday, and 56-27 on Saturday.

Petersburg’s varsity Lady Vikings competed in Wrangell’s homecoming basketball games on Jan. 16-17. The girls lost 42–28 on Friday, and 53–40 on Saturday.
