Both the Petersburg Vikings and the Haines Glacier Bears basketball teams were both undefeated coming into their games last week. Although Haines put up a fight, the Vikings won both games on Jan. 29 and 30, scoring 57–38 on Thursday and 59–46 on Friday.

Petersburg’s Lady Vikings had their first home basketball games of the season last week (Jan. 29-Feb. 1). The high schoolers faced off against Haines and Craig, and took home their first wins of the season.

Petersburg’s Viking basketball teams hit the court in Haines last weekend against the Glacier Bears, after many long hours in transit. The boys’ varsity team solidly won both of their games, and the Lady Vikings lost theirs against a team of seasoned opponents.

The Alaska Division of Air Quality issued its first smoke alert of the year for Southeast Alaska at 9 a.m on July 13th. The region will be impacted by smoke from wildfires raging just over the Canadian border. As of Friday, July 7th, traces of smoke became visible across Alaska. Now, the winds have shifted and the fires have gotten worse.

The Viking basketball teams have returned from their regional games, and their season is officially over. The Lady Vikings didn’t make it to the state tournament with the Viking boys — but Dino Brock, who coaches the girls’ teams, said he’s proud of how the Lady Vikings have honed their defensive skills this season.

Portable Southeast is an island-hopping art show designed to break down the physical and social barriers that divide the Alaska Panhandle. Each month, the exhibit’s 22 paintings are flown to a new venue. Right now, they are hanging on the walls of Petersburg’s Clausen Memorial Museum.
