Resource fair in Petersburg connects community, estimates higher homeless population

In addition to connecting people with resources, Petersburg’s ninth annual Project Connect was an opportunity to collect data on housing insecurity. Petersburg’s high schoolers volunteer for a Day of Giving

Petersburg High School students spent their last day before winter break serving the community as part of the school’s Day of Giving. From handing out food bags and organizing donations for a local nonprofit, to baking and delivering cookie boxes with cards and ornaments to businesses, to babysitting, caroling, visiting elderly folks, shoveling snow, deep cleaning the school, handing out free soup and more — whatever the task, students said they were doing it to give back to the community that supports them.

Locals organize food donations as 13% of Petersburg stomachs federal SNAP delays: ‘It’s about people who are hungry.’

Ashley Kawashima, president of Humanity in Progress (HIP), says the local nonprofit anticipates giving out triple the amount of food this month than it usually does. Organizations throughout Petersburg are working to meet increasing needs in the community, amidst delays for federal SNAP benefits that 12.7% of the borough’s population relies on to help buy food.

Resource fair connects community and measures housing insecurity in Petersburg

An event months in the making, Petersburg’s annual Project Connect resource fair and Point in Time count happened on Jan. 28. For the last several years, it’s been sponsored by local nonprofit Humanity in Progress (HIP). HIP President Ashley Kawashima told KFSK’s Olivia Rose there’s more to the snapshot of housing insecurity in the community than meets the eye.
