Petersburg’s airport might be getting an upgrade in the distant future. The state Department of Transportation has asked a state board that evaluates airports for funds to replace parts of the runway and some of the airport’s light fixtures. Petersburg’s Borough Assembly voted to support that initiative at their regular meeting this week.

Two wild animals caused mayhem in two different buildings in Petersburg last month — both, within 24 hours of each other. First, a grouse trespassed in Petersburg’s airport. Then a black bear cub broke into a grocery store downtown — and though neither people nor products were hurt in the chaos, things ended poorly for the young bear.

Petersburg’s James A. Johnson airport had a special visitor early this month: James A. Johnson. He flew in from his home Tucson, Arizona to visit old friends for the Fourth of July weekend. And — to his great surprise — ride along in the parade.

A one-of-a-kind jet touched down at Petersburg’s James A. Johnson Airport for the first time at approximately 2:10 p.m. on May 18th. The new livery on the Boeing 737-800 aircraft features a Northwest Coast formline design in blue, white, and salmon-pink.
Alaska Native artist Crystal Worl designed the aircraft, named Xáat Kwáani, which means “Salmon People” in the Lingít language.
