A group of Petersburg residents is bringing back the local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla — an un-uniformed volunteer group that helps the Coast Guard with everything from dockside safety exams, to search and rescue missions, to cooking meals aboard their vessels.

Alaska State Troopers have identified the person who died in a boating accident near Petersburg last week as Susan Paul, age 73 of California. She was in a 20-foot Hewescraft skiff that sank after a collision with a larger seine boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man stranded in the Keku Strait near Kuiu Island. The man called Petersburg’s police department after an inflatable kayak containing all of his supplies washed away.

A U.S. Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter crashed on the night of November 13th on a remote island northwest of Petersburg. There were four crew members aboard, and all survived — though two were seriously injured. They’d flown out to the island to render aid to a crabbing boat that was taking on water. But as KFSK’s Shelby Herbert reports, the people they came to rescue became their rescuers instead.
