PETERSBURG-AK Petersburg students have been reducing the amount of trash they produce by using sugarcane-fiber plates and corn-starch utensils. The biodegradable materials replaced polystyrene and plastic for a trial run in the lunch program at the high school and middle school earlier this month. After the plates, forks and spoons are used, the waste is composted by the Petersburg Indian Association. The project is the brainchild of Petersburg High School’s Earth Club. Matt Lichtenstein stopped by to talk with the club’s Elsa Sebastian and Mckenzie Peeler
