While the new school year just started in Petersburg on Sept. 2, the high school cross country team has been up and running for weeks.

The young runners have been making strides since July. The team had a couple of meets in August — one in Wrangell and, most recently, one in Hoonah.

KFSK’s Olivia Rose caught up with head coach Casey Gates to hear about how the season is going so far, and what the team’s goals are.

Listen here:

“Goals for the season? Well, we did win it all last year. We were state champs, boys and girls … we’re gonna go for that again. That’s a big goal of ours,” Gates said. “More than anything … the goal is just to grow together as a team … and to work as hard as we can, to become the best that we can.”

Next, the team of roughly 20 athletes will run in Metlakatla this Saturday, Sept. 6. They are scheduled to race each Saturday. The cross country meet calendar can be found here.
