Petersburg High School’s varsity volleyball team has been serving up a powerful start to the season.

KFSK’s Taylor Heckart spoke with head volleyball coach Jaime Cabral about the team’s recent performance. The team placed third at Lumen Christi’s Spiketacular Tournament in Anchorage on Oct. 9-11, and are ranked second in the region after Haines’ North Seeding Volleyball Tournament on Oct 16-18.

“It’s just an amazing group,” said Cabral.

He said he’s been watching the team improve every week.

Freya Tucker and Natalie Bertagnoli were both recognized as members of the all-tournament team during the Spiketacular Tournament. Tucker and Bertagnoli were among 16 players nominated by other coaches and chosen by a committee for their strong performance.

Cabral said that, moving forward, the varsity team’s goal is to minimize mistakes.

“The theme of the weekend was, we need to earn every point and make the other team earn every point,” said Cabral. “Don’t give away easy points.”

Next, both the varsity and JV teams will compete on their home court in Petersburg from Thursday, Oct. 23, through Saturday, Oct. 25. Cabral said teams from Ketchikan, Juneau, Metlakatla, and Craig will be playing. Matches start Thursday at 6:00pm, Friday at 4:00pm, and Saturday at 8:30am.
