The month-long bull moose hunt in central Southeast Alaska (RM038) ended Oct. 15, and hunters harvested a new high, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Combining both the 138 legal and seven illegal harvests — the total of 145 bull moose harvested this year outperforms the previous record in 2023, which saw a total of 141 moose harvested. During last year’s hunt, 131 moose were killed.
In recent years, most of the moose harvested during a given hunt have been taken on Kupreanof Island; that was consistent in 2025. Most of this season’s moose were harvested on Kupreanof, with 68 legal bulls and five illegal.
The second-highest harvest happened on Kuiu Island, with 28 bulls.
The Stikine River area saw 20 bulls harvested.
The other areas were in the single-digits: six legal moose were taken in Thomas Bay; three in Farragut Bay; and two on Wrangell Island.
Hunters harvested one illegal and four legal bulls on Mitkof Island. Game Unit 1C, near Port Houghton, had four moose harvested. And Other Mainland Areas saw one illegal and three legal bulls harvested.
No moose were taken this season on Zarembo, Woewodski, or Etolin Islands.
Successful hunters were required to report the kill to the state department within five days. Hunters who did not get a moose have until Oct. 30 to file a harvest report.
