Petersburg Public Health officially has Covid-19 vaccines. They received a supply in late October.

KFSK reported in September that while the Petersburg Medical Center had Covid vaccines, public health had not yet received them. In an interview, Public Health Nurse Erin Michael said she had been waiting on the state of Alaska to get a supply of vaccines.

“They were waiting for the CDC to sign some paperwork that allows the states to start ordering state-supplied vaccines, and that finally happened,” Michael said.

Michael said anyone over the age of 65 can receive a vaccine, but individuals under that age should talk with her or their medical provider, “because it’s not blanketly available for everyone.”

Individuals under 65 who are at high risk for Covid-19 complications will still be able to get the vaccine. There is a long list of conditions that increase someone’s risk of getting very sick with Covid.

“High risk would include things like having certain medical conditions, heart, lung, kidney issues, asthma, current or former smokers, overweight or obesity,” Michael said. “There’s quite a long list.”

The CDC has a list of high risk conditions on its website.

Michael asks that individuals interested in receiving the vaccine from Petersburg Public Health contact their office at (907) 772-4611 before showing up. Their office is now located at the WERC building on Haugen Drive.
