Petersburg High School’s Lady Vikings had a packed four days of basketball games at home last week, from Jan. 29 through Feb. 1.
The varsity team competed against Haines and Craig, playing each team twice. The girls won both games versus Haines, scoring 44-12 on Thursday and 38-3 on Friday. On Saturday, the girls won their game against Craig by a narrow margin, scoring 43-40, and then lost 15-38 on Sunday.
KFSK’s Taylor Heckart spoke with Lady Vikings head coach Matt Pawuk to talk about the back-to-back games and the varsity team’s first wins of the season.

Pawuk said senior Natalee Bertagnoli and sophomore Lexi Tow were both high scorers during the Saturday game against Craig. He said that freshman Zia Hulebak was also an important player in the final quarter of that game.
“She hadn’t gotten in the game before then, and all of a sudden she gets thrown into this incredibly intense game in the fourth quarter,” Pawuk said. “She gave me four really solid minutes out there.”
He said that winning against a strong team like Craig was a major victory for the Lady Vikings, and Saturday’s game was one of the highlights of his coaching career.
“The confidence that it instilled in my kids is just priceless,” Pawuk said. “It was a good night for sure.”
Petersburg’s varsity girls basketball team will next compete against Anchorage’s Lumen Christi High School on Thursday, Feb. 5 and Friday, Feb. 6 in the Petersburg High School gym. The games begin Thursday night at 5:15, and Friday night at 5:30.
Pawuk said it’s not often that the girls get to play teams outside of Southeast. The Lady Vikings traveled to a tournament in Anchorage last year, and he said the girls “were competitive” against Lumen Christi on the court.
KFSK will broadcast the home games live.
