KFSK Public Radio is offering a full-time news internship this summer, providing hands-on experience in radio reporting, producing, and live on-air hosting.

The intern works closely with KFSK’s small newsroom to produce local news and contribute to regional coverage across Southeast Alaska. As a general assignment reporter, the intern has the opportunity to cover a variety of topics. We encourage all potential applicants to visit our website to find out more about the station, our newsroom and the town. If you yearn to become a public radio reporter and you love the outdoors, Alaska is a perfect place to start.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as local host for Morning Edition weekdays from 5:30–8:30 a.m.
  • Deliver local news, weather, and community announcements live on air
  • Report, write, and produce 2–3 radio stories per week
  • Produce a range of audio content including features, news packages, wraps, and short readers
  • Conduct interviews and gather sound in the field
  • Edit audio using Adobe Audition or similar software
  • Publish stories on the station website

The intern collaborates with reporters across Southeast Alaska through the CoastAlaska Radio Network, and stories may be shared statewide through Alaska Public Media.

Applicants should have recently completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in journalism or a related field. Strong candidates may also include early-career reporters with 1–2 years of experience or print journalists looking to transition into radio. About Petersburg

KFSK is an NPR affiliate located in Petersburg, Alaska, a fishing community of about 3,400 residents on an island in Southeast Alaska. Surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, the area offers access to mountains, glaciers, and abundant wildlife. It’s a temperate rainforest that gets about 100 inches of rain per year (think Seattle, but rainier). Petersburg is accessible only by boat or plane. It’s remote, but has basic amenities. There are no fast-food restaurants or big-box stores here. But we have fresh seafood, 17 hours of daylight, and a number of hiking trails to explore!
