Southeast Alaska’s 2020-21 commercial Dungeness crab season harvest is the 2nd largest on record

The total season harvest for the summer and fall fisheries is 6.68 million pounds. That’s far above the ten-year average, which is 3.28 million pounds but just under the record breaking year of 2002-03.

Honor music students in Southeast Alaska combine solo recordings in lieu of in-person festival

Many high school music students in Southeast Alaska cannot practice or perform together this year due to COVID protocols. Some music classes, which are normally large in size, have been canceled altogether. But that hasn’t stopped the annual Southeast Honor Music Festival from taking some shape. Instead of meeting in person, virtual band and choir performances were created for the first time.

Petersburg providers hold event for people with housing insecurity

The exact number of people who are homeless or housing insecure in Petersburg is unknown but some local non-profit organizations are getting closer to figuring it out. Project Connect, an event for people with housing insecurity, will happen Jan. 27 in Petersburg.

Program that brings Indigenous culture into the classroom expands to more communities in Southeast Alaska

The program “Thru the Cultural Lens” is run by Sealaska Heritage Institute. It’s been in some of Juneau’s secondary schools for about seven years but this year it’s expanding to five K-12 school districts in smaller communities in the region.

Alaska Seaplanes to begin twice daily flights between Petersburg and Juneau

There will be daily departures from Juneau to Petersburg at 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and departures from Petersburg back to Juneau at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Flights cost $199 one way and take about 55 minutes.
