Alaska’s pink returns cause a low salmon harvest year overall

“Knowing that our freshwater habitat in Alaska is largely intact and is very productive, then you know, you’re sort of left with the question of what happens to those fish when they’re in the ocean and we believe that those ocean condition and survival of salmon in the ocean is largely what drives the strength of these returns,” said Forrest Bowers, the state’s Deputy Director of the Division of Commercial Fisheries.

But a recent opinion from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service confirms that any coastal tribal member can hunt sea otters, no matter their blood quantum.

U.S. Forest Service considers higher fees for new Alaska cabins

The U.S. Forest Service is planning to build a few dozen new cabins on the Tongass and Chugach National Forests in the coming years. The agency is proposing higher fees – $75 a night – to help keep up with the increased cost of maintenance.

Feds pinch Southeast Alaska skippers for illegally transporting crab

Three men are charged in federal court for illegally transporting Alaska crab to sell in Washington. The U.S. Attorney’s office in Alaska says they caught crab in Southeast Alaska this spring and moved them to Seattle to try and fetch a higher price.
