Grant funding will give 15 Alaska libraries free access to many paywalled newspapers

Fifteen libraries across Alaska will be gaining access to a large online database of national and in-state news sources. The Alaska Library Network received a $10,250 grant from the Atwood Foundation, which gives some libraries funding to provide free access to a database called Newsbank.

Petersburg High School volleyball season sees ‘strong start’

The volleyball season has begun for Petersburg high schoolers. The JV team played their first games of the season in Juneau from Sept. 25-27. Head coach Jaime Cabral said that while the team didn’t win, he was happy with their competitive performance.

Petersburg cross country boys take first, girls take third, at state meet

The Petersburg High School Cross Country boys’ team has officially become Division III state champions for the second time in a row. Plus, the girls’ team placed third during the Oct. 4 meet. The runners were welcomed back to Petersburg with an airport full of cheering fans, and a noise parade throughout town.

Petersburg joins other Southeast Alaska communities in asking authorities for stronger sea otter management

The Petersburg Borough assembly passed a resolution on Sept. 15 calling on state and federal authorities for help dealing with rising sea otter populations. Petersburg now joins Wrangell and Haines in asking for stronger otter management.
