The Petersburg Borough Assembly voted unanimously last week to sell two borough-owned parcels to local developer Dave Ohmer for $61,800. Ohmer plans to build a duplex on each property, which are on Haugen Drive near the hospital WERC building.

They will consider several additional issues as well — including land sales for housing, bike path maintenance, and more. The Assembly meets today (April 13) at noon in the Assembly Chambers. The Petersburg Borough Assembly unanimously approved a purchase for new safety equipment for the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department. The purchase will replace the department’s aging self-contained breathing apparatuses, which firefighters use to breathe during a fire.

Petersburg’s Borough Assembly this week approved an updated version of a 5-year lease, allowing for certain small-scale seafood processing at the town’s Community Cold Storage facility. The Assembly also approved a 1-year extension of the Borough’s contract with Republic Services, which removes the municipality’s garbage from Mitkof Island.

Petersburg’s Borough Assembly directed staff to start rewriting part of its zoning code so that it can be implemented beyond municipal limits. Officials say it’s a big project that will take several years, but a wide-ranging ordinance about communication towers will roll out as part of the process, and property outside of Petersburg’s town proper will be part of a temporary “holding district.”
