Around 100 people, many wearing red, flooded the sidewalks of Petersburg’s downtown on April 24. They were marching in support of increased state funding for education.

The Petersburg School District completed its yearly headcount last month and has nearly 670 students enrolled. That’s about 40 more students than last year.
That’s important because part of the state funding formula is tiered based on enrollment. There’s a funding cliff at 425 students. If the district falls even one student short of that number it will lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in state funding.

Southeast Alaska’s House District 2 Representative Rebecca Himschoot was back in Petersburg last week to talk with constituents. She will be starting her second legislative session in January. Himschoot spent some of her summer visiting all 21 communities in her district. She says people brought up the same two concerns in Petersburg that they do all over the district.
