Fire season marks the time of year when dryer conditions spark a higher risk of fires. The standard start date for wildland fire season is normally April 1, according to Alaska state statute. But for communities without much snow right now, it’s already here. The state issued a public order declaring an early start to fire season in parts of Alaska — including all of Southeast. Other affected areas include much of Southwest and Southcentral Alaska.

Petersburg’s high school basketball teams finished the season in Ketchikan last week. The Vikings and Lady Vikings played their last games in the regional tournament, which decided what teams qualified for the state championship. Even though Petersburg’s teams won’t be competing at state this year, their coaches are proud of the players’ growth since the season started.

Red king crab commercial permit holders in Southeast Alaska will have a better chance of fishing in the coming seasons. That’s after the Alaska Board of Fisheries approved a change in management regulations that was proposed by the state department.
