Petersburg will be hosting a regional meeting of community and business leaders in two years.

Mayor Mark Jensen made the announcement at Monday’s borough assembly meeting that Southeast Conference will hold it’s annual membership meeting here in 2016. “Couple weeks ago at Southeast Conference I realized, I found out that no one had applied for the 2016 Southeast conference annual business meeting so we threw our name in the hat and that will be here late September of 2016. So, it’s been here once before in the last eight years and it’s a big boost to the economy of the town for a few days.”

Petersburg also hosted the event in 2010. This year it was in Wrangell. It typically includes presentations on population and economic trends, as well as reports from transportation, tourism, energy and industry representatives. Municipal elected officials and staff from around Southeast also attend.

Southeast Conference was formed in 1958, originally to promote the idea of a regional ferry system. These days the group advocates on a wider range of issues affecting Panhandle communities.
