PETERSBURG-AK Two of Petersburgs Emergency Medical Technicians have been honored for their service. Valerie Allen was named Pre-Hospital Provider of the Year and Jim Birch received the Neighbor Helping Neighbor award at the Southeast Alaska Emergency Medical Symposium late last month in Juneau. The local volunteers were nominated by Petersburg Fire and EMS Director Sandy Dixon. Dixon wrote that Allen consistently signs up for 12 shifts a month and has responded to more EMS calls than anyone in the department. Allen works in the city's public works department. Birch is a harbor employee who became an EMT to be more useful in responding to emergencies at work. He also runs the harbor security vessel and Dixon nominated him for helping EMTs respond to emergencies by boat. Matt Lichtenstein took the opportunity to talk with Dixon, Birch and Allen about their Emergency Medical Service work in Petersburg
