PETERSBURG, AK Petersburg has lost 276 people since the last census in 2000. That&rsquo;s a decrease of 8.5 percent in the last decade. The federal government&rsquo;s census number for Petersburg is below the state&rsquo;s most recent estimate in 2009 of 2,997 people. That number is based mainly on permanent fund dividend applications, rather than the surveying and door-to-door counting conducted every 10 years by the federal government.<br />
