PETERSBURG-AK Former Alaskan Fisherman and Pacific Northwest Author Joe Upton is paying a visit to Petersburg this week. Upton once ran a tender out of Petersburg and fished in Southeast and Bristol bay. He now lives in Bainbridge Island, Washington and has written several books about Southeast including “The Alaska Cruise Companion” – a guide to the inside passage and “Alaska Blues” – an account of his experience as southeast fisherman. Upton’s latest book is “Bering Sea Blues: A Crabbers Tale of Fear in the Icy North.” It’s about a season Upton spent as a young crabber in back 1971. He spoke by phone this week with Matt Lichtenstein, who asked Upton what prompted him to write about that experience nearly 40 years later
