PETERSBURG-AK District Attorney Angie Kemp filed the charges against Tammi L. Avenson in Petersburg on August 16th. They include one count of theft in the second degree and four counts of falsifying business records.
According to Petersburg Police Chief Jim Agner, the State alleges that Avenson stole in excess of 20 thousand dollars from the company.

Agner says the investigation got underway after Rock and Road contacted the department about discrepancies in the company books, “They had concerns about some of the bookkeeping and apparently they had been contacted by one of the businesses in their lives that they deal with that said a bill had not been paid. They didn’t understand why and they got looking into it and this case developed from it.” :

According to a report from the police investigation filed with the charges, Rock and Road owner Richard Burrel told officers in late March of this year that he had received a call from his insurance carrier and was told a bill was not being paid. According to the report, Burrel said that while reviewing the company’s quickbooks account, he discovered suspicious purchases made with the business’s debit card. He told police that Avenson had worked for the company for about three years and alleged she was the only employee who had the pin number for the debit card which was kept in her desk.

Police allege that in their interview with Avenson, she “stated that she entered false information in the books to hide grocery bills, fuel purchases, cash withdrawls and an insulfoam purchase." Police say Avenson stated she used the foam to build a dock.
Avenson had her first appearance in court early this week and was assigned a public defender but has not yet entered a plea to the charges. She is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing, where she will likely enter a plea, on September 26th.
