PETERSBURG, AK With the new school year underway, enrollment is up at the Petersburg
Children’s Center. The town rallied to help the non-profit daycare facility this spring after a former executive director stole thousands of dollars and the organization found itself facing tens of thousands more in unpaid taxes. Thanks to an outpouring of community support, the daycare remained open. Center officials say they’ve paid off much of the debt, instituted new financial safeguards, and have grown stronger as an organization. Matt Lichtenstein recently toured the Children’s Center to find the pre-school kids and their caretakers fully engaged in the business of learning and play.
