A blacksmith shop on the mainland near Petersburg burned in a fire Tuesday night.

No one was hurt in the fire, which burned a shop belonging to Adam and Haley DesRosiers. The couple makes hand-forged knives at their remote homestead on the mainland near Point Agassiz, about 12 miles from Petersburg. The glow from the fire and explosions could be seen and heard in Petersburg.

The property owners and the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department decided that any response by volunteers across Frederick Sound would have been too late.

The local volunteer department did respond to a woodstove fire at 11:45 Tuesday evening at a home on Hungerford Hill road south of Petersburg. The homeowner there had splashed water into the firebox of the stove and extinguished flames in the stove pipe.
