Petersburg High School Sophomore, Ruby Massin, won the State Wrestling Championship in the 125 pound weight class. She’s the first Petersburg girl to ever win state wrestling and the first wrestling champion for the Vikings since 2010.

The state wrestling tournament took place in Anchorage for 1, 2, 3-A schools. Eight Petersburg wrestlers competed.

Kole Sperl finished in 5th place and Reed Anderson in 8th place.

Head Wrestling Coach Van Swearingen spoke with KFSK’s Angela Denning about state wrestling and says that Ruby Massin pinned her way through the tournament.

Van Swearingen says the team will be losing two seniors this year—Koren Sperl and Josh Coonrad. He hopes to get a lot of 8th graders moving into the team next year.
