The Sitka Sound Slayers beat the Petersburg Ragnarok Rollers in a close roller derby bout Friday night during Petersburg’s Little Norway Festival.

The Rollers had the half-time lead 81-68 but the Slayers pulled ahead 153-139 for the win. Throughout the bout, the visitors used the same jammer, “Becker the WreckHer,” again and again to keep scoring points on the Rollers. Another skater from Sitka, Melissa Leeper also known as “Leeper,” had these thoughts on the night.

“It was amazing,” Leeper said. “There were six skaters on our team this was their very first game day and it was just fantastic to get them here and they did so incredibly well.”

The Slayers have one more bout in June against a team from Anchorage and that wraps up the skating season for them.

This was Petersburg’s last competition before a summer break. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Petersburg’s coach Rebecca Anderson, derby name Midlife Tigress, who said the final score looked better than the team had anticipated.
